Hard Hat to Hardscape: Scrubs Works in Action
This project focused on the delivery of a comprehensive soft and hard landscaping package as part of a wider grand external works scheme, transforming a rear courtyard into a practical and visually appealing space. Works included the formation of nine car parking bays, a new access road, and installation of key infrastructure to support long-term site use.
A crucial component of the project involved Section 278 highway works, enabling the modification and improvement of the existing highway network to facilitate the new access road and ensure full compliance with local authority standards.
The balance between hardscaping elements—such as car parking, cycle store slabs, and a plant enclosure—and soft landscaping features was carefully considered to enhance aesthetics, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability.
The project also included the construction of a new sprinkler pump house and the integration of a below-ground drainage system, delivering critical fire safety compliance without compromising the visual integrity of the site.
Overall, the scheme delivered a robust, functional, and design-conscious external environment, integrating practical infrastructure with environmental responsibility — all executed the Scrubs way.
Challenges
The external works were to create car parking spaces, a new access road, cycle storage, and a sprinkler pump house for the GP surgery faced several challenges:
Ensuring smooth and efficient access for construction vehicles and materials without damaging the site or delaying timelines.
Managing different teams, such as those working on hard landscaping, drainage, and building construction, to keep the project on schedule and avoid costly delays.
Ensuring that the pump house has adequate drainage to manage runoff from both the building and the surrounding hardscape.
Designing permeable surfaces for car parking spaces to aid natural drainage and reduce water runoff.
Managing underground utilities to ensure the new drainage does not interfere with existing services.
